As RuneScape 3 has just dropped the 29th skill Necromancy, it's all the rage right now. So there's no doubt many of our users are already embarking on their dark journey to 120, which is why we're here to provide you the tools to do so with minimal stress and effort! This guide is filled with all you'll need to know to complete the first quest in the Necromancy series and get the wheels turning so your adventure is all smooth sailing. Now let's dive into some of the finer details.
What Is the Necromancy! Quest?
This is the first quest in "The First Necromancer" quest series, acting as the introduction to both the new Necromancy skill and the City of Um, which expands the Underworld of Gielinor. The new Necromancy skill offers users the chance to conjure the undead, conquer the Underworld and perfect your Necromancer abilities; an exceptional new addition to the RS3 world.
This new quest is the first in its series, and brings with it several others; an excellent way to get stuck into the new skill and bring you one step closer to level 120 and a fabulous new skill cape. This is also a free-to-play quest, as non-members have access to the Necromancy RS3 early stages.
Requirements and Foes in Our RS3 Necromancy! Quest Guide
This quest has no official requirements due to the fact it is the beginning stage of the new RS3 Necromancy skill. So you'll be able to begin your journey into the Underworld with minimal effort, and as the quest's official length is short, it won't be too long before you're well into your Necromancer adventure.
The enemies you'll face in this quest are low-level monsters of the Underworld, Ghost Troll Brute (1), and Ghost Troll Lout (1), both sitting at level 3.
Getting Started With the RS3 Necromancy! Quest
To get things started with this quest, you'll need to make your way just north of Draynor's Lodestone and inspect the white light portal, also known as the Underworld Portal. When you do so, a floating sword will appear and attack you; under the command of Rasial, the First Necromancers.
Knocking on Death's Door
This attack will result in your "death," transporting you to Death's Office, where Death himself will greet you, confused by your death. Explain to him how you had briefly begun your investigation before a black metal sword with glowing green runes mercilessly ended your adventure. Death will inform you the runes on the blade translate to "anguish," and he will instruct you to travel to the Underworld with him.
This will invoke a cutscene in which you are told Rasial has selected you as his next apprentice. You will then find yourself at the ritual site of the City of Um, where Rasial will greet you. The meeting isn't a friendly one, however, as Rasial explains his plans to wage war on the living by unleashing the souls he has collected; he states that soon enough, the dead will outnumber the living. He will then go on to taunt you, explaining how your only way to defeat him is to learn Necromancy in RS3 and how Death has no option but to assist you on your journey.
Once he is done with his speech, you will see Lupe and Sostratus appear from the bridge. These are the two remaining survivors since Rasial has drained the Well of Souls. With the help of Death, the two remaining souls conclude that Rasial has conducted a communion ritual utilizing his own soul vessel to move the souls to it. Upon the realization, Death summons Malignius Mortifer, a Necromancer, to be your guide through the early stages of Necromancy. He will show you how to conduct your own ritual to replenish the City of Ums' soul count.
The Communion Ritual
This part of the RS3 Necromancy! quest guide will begin with Malignius telling you to clear the way to the nearby mounds of dust covering the floor. Interact with them. To do so, there are four surrounding the ritual site, which are marked by waypoint arrows.
The First Casting
Malignius will then go on to explain the steps of the ritual, indicating you must place a focus item on the center pedestal; he will provide you with a grubby bone to use as your focus item. Placing the item will determine the ritual you're going to conduct; then, you must draw the required Glyphs to the nearby tiles. Select the pedestal's "Place focus" option; this will allow you to then select the "makeshift communion" ritual.
From this action, you’ll be granted:
- Basic Ritual Candles
- Basic Ghostly Ink
Place the basic ritual candles in the four pentagon symbol tiles around the ritual site. You'll also want to use your ink to fill the Glyphs needed for the ritual. Pay close attention at this stage, as Glyphs can be placed on any of the tiles at the site, but you have to ensure that you use the correct number and type for the selected ritual. So you'll then want to interact with the nearby Glyph spot and draw the "Commune" Glyph, repeating this on a second Glyph spot.
However, before you can continue with the Necromancy quest in RS3, Malignius will point out a depleted Glyph of a previous ritual remains on one of the tiles; this is something you must correct before you continue. He will then offer you more basic ghostly ink to interact with the worn-down Elemental tile and repair it to continue with your current ritual.
With all of these steps correctly carried out, you'll be ready to begin the ritual. Select "start ritual" on the skull platform beside you, and you will begin the chant. Upon completing the ritual, Malignius will express his surprise at your success on your first attempt, and you will be granted some Necromancy XP.
The Well of Souls
The Communal ritual results in Ted, a skeleton from Um, being summoned. He will advise that you interact with the Well of Souls. Doing so opens the interface, which displays the Talent Tree; when it does, select the first talent shown at the bottom titled "Conjure Skeleton Warrior"; you'll then notice that it requires a talent point to unlock.
Ted will then go on to explain that despite filling the vessel enough to gain more power, you must first earn a talent point to be deemed worthy. In order to acquire these points, you must earn combat experience in Necromancy.
Into Battle
At this point of your Necromancy questing journey, Sostratus will give you a Death Guard, an item used to imbue powerful attacks with necrotic power. Equip the Death Guard and begin your attack on the nearby Ghost Troll Brute and Ghost Troll Lout. Keep in mind, however, that until you unlock Necromancy abilities, you will attack using auto-attacks, and all attacks you perform with Necromancy in RS3 have a chance to critically strike an enemy, which can increase damage.
Upon slaying the two low-level creatures, you'll gain a talent point, at which point you should interact with the Well of Souls once more, and you'll then be able to unlock the Conjure Skeleton Warrior talent. In order to use this talent, however, you'll need the following:
- A Conduit
- Ectoplasm
Sostratus will also provide you with a skull lantern for future conjurations. As for the ectoplasm, this can be acquired by performing rituals, though as you embark on an entirely new journey, you will gain 25 once you've finished conversing with the group.
And that's that! You've successfully maneuvered your very first RS3 Necromancy journey. Go forth and conquer the Underworld! Now, let's take a look at those rewards we've all been waiting for!
