The Jagex Launcher is a game launcher for the Jagex games, RuneScape and Old School RuneScape. It allows you to join together up to 20 different characters (at the time of writing) in a single account, known as a Jagex account. This update will make the logging-in process a lot simpler. It also attempts to provide many security updates that players have long asked for. We are aware that some of our customers have questions about this new release from Jagex, particularly if or how it affects their RS3/OSRS accounts. We will attempt to cover all the questions we get asked regularly in this guide.
Information About the Jagex Launcher
Although it is not currently mandatory, whether players like it or not, the launcher is here, so let's discuss the facts and help you to understand this new Jagex creation a bit better.
Jagex’s plans for the launcher
Jagex has stated the main reasons for the launcher are account security and accessibility improvements. Players have given their pros and cons across different gaming communities, but it does look like the launcher is here to stay. For now, you aren’t forced to use it, so until Jagex changes this, you can carry on playing as normal if you wish. Something else to note is this is not just for OSRS; you can play RS3 with it, also.
Accounts
An OSRS or RS3 character linked to a launcher account will behave in the same way as if it wasn’t linked, with the exception of how you log into it. You can play on multiple characters from the same account but not from multiple launchers. You also can’t link two or more characters on different accounts. Jagex has also stated that the maximum number of characters in one account will be 20. Some of these limitations may seem frustrating to players, but Jagex’s argument is that the security benefits will outweigh any negatives.
The future
The launcher was first released as an open beta in February 2022 and has undergone some tweaks and improvements. Currently, anyone can use the launcher, but it is not currently mandatory. Characters added to a launcher account cannot be removed from it, so it's important to make sure that is definitely what you wish to do before linking it. Furthermore, although there are currently no fixed dates, Jagex does state that, eventually, it will become mandatory for people to use the launcher.
Multiple Jagex Launcher instances
We understand that some players are concerned about having multiple characters across different Jagex accounts. As it currently stands, you cannot have more than one account running at once. You could, of course, have them running on different computers/devices if you have them available. There are more cumbersome workarounds, such as using a virtual machine, but we wouldn’t recommend this as it could risk the security of the account. Whether Jagex changes this restriction remains to be seen.
Runelite and other clients
At the time of writing, the launcher is able to run the official RS3 and OSRS clients, as well as the Runelite client from OSRS. There is a version for Windows and Mac that can be downloaded from the Jagex website. In the future, Jagex has said they will enable support for the HDOS client, as well as release a version for the Linux operating system. The ability for Jagex to control which clients are allowed and which aren’t demonstrates another game-integrity benefit, although many players are rightfully disappointed by this limitation.
Questions Regarding the Buying And Selling of Accounts
Now let’s discuss more account and character-specific questions that our customers might have.
Account descriptions
When looking for an account on our website, just click on the description, and we will say if the character is connected to a Jagex account or not. Unless stated otherwise, accounts will come with just that character on the launcher, and we will provide all the login credentials for that account. If you buy an unlinked account, then you can link it to a launcher profile if you wish.
Supplier accounts
Most of our supplier accounts, also known as in-house accounts, will be unlinked. This means that if you choose to, you can import an account into your launcher after your purchase it, but remember, this is an irreversible process. Eventually, supplier characters may need to be created on their own accounts, but we will assess that situation when Jagex makes it mandatory.
Selling accounts
Absolutely, we are still able to buy RS3 and OSRS accounts from you. You can sell either launcher-linked or unlinked accounts. However, please note that you will have to sell all the characters on a launcher account, as you cannot separate or remove any. For the sake of simplicity, if you have an unlinked account, we recommend that you don’t link it to a launcher account before selling it to us.
FAQs
What does the Jagex launcher do?
The launcher allows you to play all your OSRS and RS3 characters from one location and with one login. It also provides many additional security features that will protect your characters from many previous risks.
Should I use the launcher?
The main benefits of the launcher are improved security and greater convenience. You may prefer the freedom of having your account unlinked; however, eventually, all accounts will need to be linked, according to Jagex.
Conclusion
The launcher has been around for a few months now in public access following, with many players choosing to connect their accounts. Jagex has been transparent with updates, and we await eagerly to see how this application develops. It hasn’t been a completely smooth ride, but it seems this will be the future Jagex is heading in.
