Vorkath RS3 Guide: Defeating the Undead

By Helen Gray | Created: November 17, 2023 | Last updated: December 18, 2024 | Read Time: 9 minutes

Welcome back to another chapter in the Chicks Gold blog series! Within this week's article, we're going to take a look at the new and exciting RS3 Vorkath introduction. This undead beast hit the game on October 9th 2023, making appearances in the Fort Forinthry quest series as he lay dead beneath the ice of Ungeal, later being revived as a servant of Zemouregal. But that's not what we're here to discuss with this blog installment! Instead, we will be discussing the new and exciting side of Vorkath in RS3, as he is introduced as a boss for players to slay and reap the rewards. So, let's begin by taking a look at who exactly Vorkath is.

Who Is Vorkath in RS3?

Many moons ago, the Dragonkin Zorgoth created Vorkath with the intent of releasing him into Gielinor to wreak havoc on the innocent humans within. Unfortunately for Zorgoth, his plans were derailed when the dragon failed to possess the fearsome traits hoped for. Instead, the dragon remained docile and tame, even into adulthood. This sadly saw Vorkath being slain by his creator, as his use to them was non-existent, leaving his lifeless body on display at one of the Ungael's towers.

Following the Age of Chaos and the Zamorakian Civil War, Zemouregal, a child of Mah, began another attempt at conquering the Kingdom of Misthalin. Fortunately for the kingdom, the people were able to reclaim a vale northeast of Varrock with the help of The Adventurer and created Fort Forinthry. To combat this, Zemouregal began a search for power; on the way, he uncovered Ungael and Vorkath's corpse in the tomb, and due to his stalling of The Adventurer, he was able to raise Vorkath and return with him to the mainland.

Bringing us to the present, so the question now is, what's next?

What Can We Expect From Zemouregal and Vorkath in RS3?

As the blue dragon has now risen from death, there are sure to be some exciting adventures ahead for players. A new quest, 'Battle of Forinthry,' must be completed. It will take you through the Story mode of the boss battle, unlocking the Normal and Hard versions upon completion.

The intensive battle is set to take place just beyond the walls of Fort Fointhry, seeing the player defending the walls, keeping the undead hordes at bay, and snuffing out the three places of power that Zemouregal is using to keep Vorkath standing. The process of disrupting the power at hand will be brought to you in the dialogue of the quest, so make sure you don't skip through anything in order to have a full understanding of the situation, allowing you the best chance of slaying the undead beast.

Once you have managed to complete the Story mode version of this encounter, you'll be free to return time and time again to challenge Vorkath in any of the three modes available. You can do so either solo or in a group setting by interacting with the commemorative statue in the Fort's Town Hall; this will kick start another round with the dragon.

Vorkath in RS3 Requirements

As many RuneScape 3 players will be well aware by now; boss battles often come with their fair share of requirements. And RS3's Vorkath is no different, so let's take a look at what you'll need to tackle this mighty beast:

Zemouregal and Vorkath RS3 Strategies

We're all eager to understand this dangerous creature and his master and how to take them down, so let’s take a look at their attacks and strategies. We know Zemouregal and Vorkath can be battled in three modes: Story, Normal, and Hard, and the dragon has two phases. His first phase is the 'normal' boss battle, and the second is the build-up 'Siege' phase.

The normal boss battle plays out as expected, whereas the Siege mode will allow players to take down some of the fonts of power used by Zemouregal to fuel Vorkath. If players are able to disable this, Vortkath's attacks will be weakened, ultimately making the fight easier to secure that win. When playing Story and Normal mode, you must face the Siege phase; it is optional in Hard mode, and this phase will be skipped entirely. So, let's explore his move sets and these two phases a little more in-depth so you're truly prepared for the fight ahead.

Vorkath RS3 Moves

Auto Attack - Vorkath uses Magic to attack.

Ice Circle - Vorkath flies upward for a brief period, creating a ring of ice. This will then expand outwards four times; you have to be careful to avoid these attacks, as getting caught up in it will see you stunned and taking damage.

Dragon Breath - The undead dragon spews dragonfire. Like metal dragons, Protect/Deflect Magi will have no effect in reducing damage, but antifire protection is still an option.

Pools - Vorkath spits purple or green pools onto the ground; if you step in these puddles, you will experience heavy damage.

Ice Barrage - At the command of Zemouregal, Vorkath flies to the sky, preparing an arena-wide attack that will inflict huge Magic damage. If you want to avoid this attack, you’ll need to make use of the Extra action button to get the guards to fire on Vorkath upon his return. If you counter this move correctly, you should see the attack dismantled and Vorkath taking 10,000 damage and being stunned.

Zemouregal RS3 Moves

Auto Attack - Zemouregal used Necromancy to attack.

Bone Spikes - Zemouregal conjures bone spikes from the ground below to a targeted player; this will be shown by the ground beginning to shake and small debris falling. This will be followed by spikes erupting from the earth that deal up to 3,000 damage and stunning players in a 7x7 AoE.

Undead - Conjures undead assistance in battle, bringing forth phantom sorcerers, skeleton rangers, zombie warriors, ghost healers, empowering zombies, and skeleton shielders.

Necromancy Abilities - Zemouregal can access the following abilities:

  • Death Skulls - infrequent use, hits 3 times in total.
  • Volley of Souls - Comes into play when Zemouregal has 3 Residual Souls.
  • Finger of Death
  • Blood Siphon

The Siege Phase

As mentioned above, you'll be trying to dismantle Zemouregal's three ports of power throughout this battle. In this phase, you'll be preventing the undead hordes' advancements on the Fort, so not only will you have to slay them as they progress, but you'll also need to target these powerpoints to cut the hordes off at their source.

To do so, you can go straight to Zemouregal and Vorkath to destroy the main point of power, or you can choose to take out the other two sources first. Choosing the latter option will mean some of the special attacks from the boss fight will be disabled, ultimately making the battle that little bit easier. Each port of power will be ‘guarded’ by four of the undead army, as well as an undead giant; keep your eyes peeled for these giants, as they have a larger aggro range than that of the guards.

The Fight Phase

Within this phase, you'll be facing off against Vorkath and his master himself, and as their health will vary in each mode, let’s break them down.

Vorkath Health

  • Story Mode: 375,000
  • Normal Mode: 750,000
  • Hard Mode: 1,500,000

Zemouregal Health

  • Story Mode: 150,000
  • Normal Mode: 250,000
  • Hard Mode: 500,000

At this point, you’ll enter the Fight stage of the boss battle, and you’ll gain access to an ‘Extra action button’; this will allow you to order the guards of the fort to fire a ballista, which will launch arrows at each enemy, inflicting a total of 10,000 damage to the undead.

It’s recommended that you use antifire protection, as Vorkath’s dragonbreath can hit with up to 8,000 damage. Zemouregal will then attack using Necromancy and his array of skills mentioned above. Vorkath in RS3, however, will mostly inflict damage through the use of his special attacks, so consider also having Protect/Deflect Necromancy, as it is his master who will be the worrisome opponent at this stage. Sadly, you’ll also be unable to flick against both of them, as they use both different speeds and ranges during attacks. Here’s a breakdown of the four fight phases:

Phase 1

Vorkath will access the following abilities in an attempt to defeat the player:

  • Ice Circle
  • Bone Spikes

After you deplete his health by 25%, he will turn on his master, inflicting 10,000 damage; this will lift his damage immunity in favor of a massive damage reduction.

Phase 2

In the second phase of this battle, he will utilize the above abilities, as well as ‘Pools’. This time, when a further 25% of his health is depleted, he will turn on Zemouregal once more and inflict 10,000 damage.

Phase 3

At this stage in the game, the stakes will rise. As Vorkath will be utilizing the following move sets:

  • 2 Auto-attacks
  • Ice Barrage
  • Ice Circle
  • Bone Spikes
  • Pools
  • Ice Barrage
  • Loops from Ice Circle

In this phase, when Vorkath uses Ice Barrage, you must use the extra action button, which is most useful to be pressed as soon as Vorkath takes flight. While the effects take their time to come into play, Zemouregal will lose his damage reduction, making him completely vulnerable to harm. This will come back into play once Vorkath has recovered; however, it is totally possible to slay Zemouregal before Vorkath’s recovery, which will then skip the end stages of this phase.

Phase 4

If you make it to this stage, Vorkath will soon reach a health of 0 before flying off and abandoning his commander. This is your chance to take down Zemouregal and reign supreme!

Zemouregal and Vorkath RS3 Rewards

For the completion of the Battle of Forinthry quest, you'll receive rewards as with all quests. Unlike drops from slaying Vorkath, this is a one-time reward, but still valuable nonetheless; so, let's check out what will be gained from this new and exciting quest:

  • 30k Necromancy XP Lamp
  • 1 Quest Point
  • 2 Treasure Hunter Keys

You'll also gain access to the commemorative statue within your Fort that allows you to repeat this boss battle.

Vorkath RS3 Drops
